Eric is going to be facilitating a discussion on consensus- what it is and how to reach it- in our online, networked world. The group will sketch out what consensus looks like online and will codesign an online tool for coming to consensus. The group will learn together about the different decision-making and consensus methods we apply within our organizations and collaboratively design and build these into online tools that can enhance and complement them.
Here's the details one more time:
What: Codesigning an Online Consensus Tool
When: Sunday April 25th, 1:30 to 3:00, repeating every other Sunday.

<b>The Heavy Root of Poetry: Street Theater, Graffiti, Folk Song, Writing and Singing While Walking </b><br />
Saturday 3/10, 12-4pm<br />
at Libertalia<br />
led by Robi (rsnyderm@gmail.com)<br />
From Robi: Song and poetry gather the voices and stories of a place, carry them, make them at once a monument and an experience, a ritual, a returning and a rapture, carry what has happened to the people in that place, carry the prophecies of those people in that place. This workshop will involve intensive meditation-based writing; a lecture and discussion on giving and receiving poetry within the physical and social architecture of this country: through the community and publicity and protest of graffiti, street theater, folk songs; through the privacy of writing or singing while wandering.<br />

It's also fun. This game has worked well in the past for those going to or coming from work or study abroad, people entering or leaving college, people changing jobs or work location, people going into new groups, social change activists and community organizers. And many others. Join the Providence Free School & Libertalia at 8pm on Friday, February 10th, for a screening of the award-winning & controversial 2010 documentary "Schooling the World", about the impacts of modern education on indigenous cultures. Discussion to follow.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
All over the world, volunteers raise money to build schools in traditional societies, convinced that education is the only path to a 'better' life for indigenous children. But is this true? What really happens when we replace a traditional culture's way of learning and understanding the world with our own? Does life really get better for its people? SCHOOLING THE WORLD takes a challenging, sometimes funny, ultimately deeply disturbing look at the effects of modern education on the world's last sustainable traditional cultures.</blockquote>

<b>From the facilitators:</b> This course will introduce simple cleaning techniques to create a healthier home, with out spending a lot of money on big brand “germ killing” products. We will go over chemical cleaners and the harmful effects they can have, and non-toxic cleaning solutions and the benefits of switching to homemade supplies. We will provide recipes of basic cleaning products and demo a few in class. Participants are welcome to come and gain knowledge to make their own household cleaners beyond the class. We also encourage people to come with a few basic supplies if they can, to make cleaners in class. <b>From the Teacher:</b></div>

This course will be an introduction to Portuguese. Portuguese is one of the most important languages used in the Providence area, and this class will offer people the chance to learn basic Portuguese and also expose them to the various Portuguese (and Kriolu) speaking communities of the area. Basic language skills will be covered, with further course material developed in accordance to students' needs and interests. In addition, a focus will be given to the Azorean, Brazilian and Cape Verdean communities in the area as well as a general introduction to those cultures (history, music, food, cuisine). Students will not need materials, but I will be willing to recommend books for purchase. This class will focus on basic language skills and culture, but students with more specific language needs are encouraged to let me know so that I can try to help them. I speak and teach Brazilian Portuguese, but will be willing to teach students Azorean variants as well as these are more useful in the Portuguese-speaking community in the region. I do not speak Kriolu BUT am willing to do some very introductory discussions of it as a language and help people to get into the right direction if that is their primary interest.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span></div>prov free schoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13051774255586993708noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6034263533396331409.post-84645245766063489142011-09-19T13:34:00.000-04:002011-09-19T22:58:52.141-04:00Botanical Medicine and Witch Craft!<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>

The Free School is incredibly excited to announce that its first three classes will be starting soon! More information on the classes is below, and anyone who's interested should just show up at the first class or contact the teacher/facilitator. All three of these classes will be<b> starting between the 17th and the 25th</b>, and all three will be meeting at <b>Libertalia</b>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One clarifying note: while these are the first three classes to get started, proposals are always welcome, and more classes will be probably be starting up in October and November.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
1) <b>Botanical Medicine,</b> taught by Chanelle Bergeron<br />
<div>
Mondays 7:30pm-9:30pm (1st class 9/19)</div>
<div>
No experience required! </div>
<div>
Contact cabbiee@gmail.com with questions. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
From the teacher: I want to get the word out to people who are looking to learn about the plants around them & what these wonderful plants have to offer us, or are looking for a way to experience an alternative form of medicine, gain resources, & reclaim some of their own personal power when it comes to medicine & taking care of themselves. </div>
<div>
The class would be focused around western, traditional, & intuitive botanical medicine: history & folklore/basics of botanical structure/a touch of ayurveda/practical & first aid applications/materia medica/herbal energetics/medicine making/wildcrafting ethics/some physiology/male & female reproductive health/etc."</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2) <b>Popular Programming,</b> taught by Daniel Patterson</div>
<div>
Saturdays 1pm-3 (1st Class 9/17)</div>
<div>
No experience required!</div>
<div>
Contact dbp@riseup.net with questions.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
From the teacher: The motivation of this class is to explore language and communication as it connects to computer programming. Our lives are surrounded by and dominated by the function of computers, yet most people think that the way they work is not something they could understand. The intention of this class is to show that this is not the case, through an exploratory process inspired by the work of Paulo Freire.</div>
<div>
It is aimed at people who have no experience programming. People with experience are of course welcome, but if you are looking for a class on “how to build a website” or “learning X programming language”, you’ll probably be disappointed. The intention of this class is to develop the tools and understanding to dissect the technological society that we live in, and build alternatives if you want to. It’s an experimental class (what isn’t?), and shouldn’t be like any other “programming” class (or at least any I’ve heard of).</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
More info on the class at <a href="http://popprog.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">popprog.tumblr.com</a>. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3) <b>Why Revolution,</b> facilitated by Oi</div>
<div>
Sundays 7:30pm-9:30 (1st Class 9/18)</div>
<div>
No experience required!</div>
<div>
Contact mysticetoi@gmail.com with questions. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
From the facilitator: A participant-led discussion group focused on the roots of revolution, what revolution looks like today, and where revolutionary movement is headed. The discussion group will explore the intricacies of what exactly a/the revolution is and why people are part of it. Since I would like this class to be participant lead, I really have no idea where the discussion will go.</div>
<div>
I hope to bring into the group the use of essays, letters, news sources, interviews, books, maps, documentaries and other mediums that help us understand our socio-economic reality.</div>

We are made up of the people who participate in classes, workshops, and skillshares here. Behind the scenes, a loose, informal organizing group with minimal authority has been meeting to create a vision, coordinate logistics and publicity, and push things forward. <b>Everyone is welcome to be a part of this effort</b><b> in any way</b> — <i>and we're excited to have you on board in any way.</i> <br />

Here's how it works: <br />
<br />
<b>To stay informed of all free school classes, meetings, fundraisers, and general updates, you can join our <i>announcement email list</i></b> (aka our "announce listserv"). You'll receive a small number of email updates, sent out to a list of people from the top-down only (<span style="font-size: x-small;">a necessary evil / hierarchy</span>). Joining this list is easy: just head on over to <a href="https://lists.riseup.net/www/subscribe/provfreeschool-announce">https://lists.riseup.net/www/subscribe/provfreeschool-announce</a> , enter your email address, click "Submit," and click the confirmation link in your inbox.<br />
<br />
<b>To get involved with the informal organizing group</b>, you have to do two things: (1) start coming to the organizing meetings, and (2) join our <i><b>organizing email list</b></i> (aka "organize listserv"). This is a higher-volume discussion list, which all members can use to reply to all other members. To subscribe to this group, go to <a href="https://lists.riseup.net/www/info/provfreeschool-organize">https://lists.riseup.net/www/info/provfreeschool-organize</a> to read the list's guidelines, and then click "Subscribe" and follow the same confirmation instructions above.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6034263533396331409.post-70966523026641325292011-08-30T11:28:00.000-04:002011-08-30T12:58:54.582-04:00Course proposal feedback & organizing meeting - Wednesday at 6:30!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9DR8huzdq6oI3GA2t-hizqLfssgyEVkMelvga9IdHQr6GxZeb3ZidRIHzWuKVmO3p8vwWL7VZcL3YuG_GImiM60kKxQzNrvZi5KnKUbyA39VCcBSyY1fnYxbctUI0QKDZ36sgQh4uEkWZ/s1600/814253a09da0f1065a2c5110.L.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:right; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 190px; height: 132px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9DR8huzdq6oI3GA2t-hizqLfssgyEVkMelvga9IdHQr6GxZeb3ZidRIHzWuKVmO3p8vwWL7VZcL3YuG_GImiM60kKxQzNrvZi5KnKUbyA39VCcBSyY1fnYxbctUI0QKDZ36sgQh4uEkWZ/s320/814253a09da0f1065a2c5110.L.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5646694420802483682" /></a>This <b>Wednesday, August 31, at 6:30 pm at Libertalia</b> (280 Broadway), we're holding our <b>next organizing meeting</b>. </tbody></table>This should be a short, loosely structured meeting, with check-ins on progress and divvying up of tasks + responsibilities. September is quickly approaching — let's make it happen! <br />
<br />
After this, we'll have a casual "work party" !! ( work = fun !!??? ) <br />
<br />
If you have a laptop, consider bringing it so we can work on things together & individually. Please also think of other tasks that can be done off the computer — designing brochures & flyers on paper, maybe? — and bring paper/markers/materials needed. <br />
<br />
Potluck-style snacking is encouraged. <br />
